Visit Photo-Eye To Purchase “Same Difference” Rinko Kawauchi’s “Illuminance” is a hardcover monograph, by Aperture, that manages to glow in a manner suggested by the title. The spine is separated from the book, which is a little quirky, but the inside of the cover is more easily seen this way, and it introduces the trippy, day-glow, space-age palette that one finds within the plates. Nice touch. Not unlike Mr. Panar’s aforementioned book, “Illuminance” is a collection of seemingly disconnected images. But it differs distinctly, as these images are anything but random and dry. Page after page, the photographs scream “art,” with light, and color, dynamic compositions, and the impact of surprise. The kaleidoscopic pinks and purples, black cats and costume jewelry, desert wanderers and dead bugs, and of course the requisite light cascading through cherry blossoms. Ultimately, she builds a cohesive vision through the narrative.

In January 2010, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 55,000 units of children’s costume jewelry that contained high levels of cadmium and in June of this year, 12 million promotional drinking glasses sold at McDonald’s were recalled because the painted coating contained cadmium. I have mentioned before that the reason we moved to Colorado 2 months ago , was for my husband to complete several clinical rotations (for PA school) before graduating next spring. And lucky us, we were able to bum my parents basement apartment off of them while staying here. ( Thanks Mom and Dad! ) The basement has everything we need; bedrooms, a bathroom, a family room……even a kitchen. This party Highlight is a little late but I love the idea, simple, elegant. Don’t you like it. Here is what Angel from TaDa! Creations has done in her master bedroom redo. I’ve had my eye on this frame at IKEA for a while now. And thanks to a gift card from a sweet friend, I was finally able to bring her home and… …turn her into a jewelry holder. Isn’t she purdy? I’ll show you what I did. It was easy-peasy. Find a frame you love and fabric that compliments your room. Now get yourself to Home Depot (or Lowes, I’m not picky) and buy the smallest package you can find of the smallest size chicken wire. It will be in the lawn and garden center, outside. This roll was about $5. Pick up some “S” hooks too. I only bought 1 pkg…I should have bought two. If you don’t already own one, buy a tin snips too. Or borrow one from your neighbor. Roll out the chicken wire (ahem…poultry netting) and try to flatten it the best you can. This is no easy task and I didn’t try really hard, so mine is still kind of lumpy.

Arik Kastan jewelry honors the beauty of rose gold
Two fans of rose gold with a keen eye for design are taking the pink-tinged metal and paying homage to traditional Victorian aesthetic in their line called Arik Kastan Designers Tamar Kelman and Christine Kim, who are based in Los Angeles and New York, respectively, named their jewelry collection after a Tel Aviv-based craftsman who mixes a “special blend” of rose gold and produces pieces based on their vision. Kastan, Kelman and Kim keep dainty vintage details such as filigree etching and pave, rough diamonds running throughout the collection. Moonstones, garnets and emeralds are set in the gold and pop against the warm-hued metal. Kelman discovered Kastan’s work while traveling in Israel and became “obsessed” with it. “He has guided us, because he’s such a seasoned metal worker,” Kelman says about Kastan. “He has such amazing technical skills specific to the Victorian era, and we have an eye for design.”

Kathy Rose, owner of Roseark (formerly Kaviar & Kind) in Los Angeles, is one designer who launched a less expensive line for her celebrity-frequented -jewelry outpost. Roseark has a customer for pieces like Alon Shina’s 18k yellow-gold labradorite and moonstone bib necklace for $21,000, to be sure. But at press time, her eponymous secondary line, made of 22k gold and semiprecious stones and rarely priced above the $1,000 mark, had been on the floor for about a week. “I’ve sold three units,” she says. “That’s a lot for my first low-end line launch.”

Psychic said stealing jewelry would remove curse, sheriff says
A psychic was arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials for allegedly scaring a 12-year-old girl into stealing $10,000 in jewelry. During “psychic readings,” the suspect, Jackeline Lopez, of Palmdale, allegedly told the girl “horrible things” would happen to her unless she stole the jewelry from her parents. “Over a period of a month following the reading, suspect Lopez encouraged the victim to bring her jewelry from the victim’s home to be used in removing the curse from the victim and their family,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement released Friday morning. “Routinely Lopez would orchestrate a ritual in which the victim would place the stolen jewelry in the caldron and attempt to remove the curse. Each time, however, Lopez would tell the victim that what they had brought was not enough to remove the horrible curse and she needed more. This continued until the victim’s parents noticed the missing jewelry and confronted the victim on its whereabouts.”

Armed couple steal $8,000 from downtown jewelry store
Los Angeles police detectives released a video Friday of an armed man and woman robbing a downtown jewelry store of about $8,000 in cash. Detectives say the crime goes beyond the normal “smash and grab” robbery conducted by gang members in the jewelry district because the suspects appeared to have organized the heist. The robbers entered the small jewelry store on the fifth floor of the Mitta Building at 404 West 7th St. around 3 p.m. Tuesday. One suspect spoke to the jewelers, then pulled a gun and forced them to kneel. After some screaming, the jewelers gave up the cash, which the robbers placed in a bag before leaving without hurting anyone. “The man with the gun seems to be the brawn in the case, while the woman seems to be the brains,” said Det. Alfredo Rasch, a veteran investigator of downtown jewelry robberies. Rasch said the “man-woman pairing is unusual.” The man was described as black or possibly Latino, 6 feet tall and 35 to 40 years old. He wears thick reading glasses.
