Bead for Life/Gifts for Life
Yesterday I set you up with a little teaser in which I told you about the EPIC EXTRAVAGANZA beginning on Monday here on the EO and over at OMyFamily The inspiration behind this event is Bead for Life , an organization truly worthy of our support as it helps women support themselves and their families by making beautiful beaded jewelry from recycled paper, shea butter soap and peppermint lip balm. The story of how Bead for Life came to be is astonishing and powerful. The way this organization continues to support the women (and men) of Uganda (and other parts of the world) is nothing short of redemptive and life-changing. No, scratch that. Life.

Interview with Loupiac, Lampwork Art bead artist Florence Sauerbrey
Let me introduce you to Florence Sauerbrey. Flo is a magnificent Lampworker who creates beads. Her Etsy store is called Loupiac . I have been in love with her work for a long time. I know you’ll love her too. Enjoy this little virtual interview! 1. Who are you, and what do you create? I am Florence Sauerbrey aka Loupiac on Etsy. I came from France 9 years ago to marry that wooden boat builder man of mine. I make lampwork beads with glass rods that I melt with a torch. Sometimes I make jewelry with my beads, wear a piece once or a couple of times and then it disappears in my drawer forever because I don’t wear -nor do I sell.

The Journey of a Bead C Czech Glass
Czech glass beads are beautiful additions to jewelry designs, but not too many people know how a bead comes into being. These beads are still made in the Czech Republic the same way they have been for hundreds of years. Take a journey into the makings of one special bead. Early Years (250 B.C.) : A piece of glass originally was created by lampworking. An oil lamp is used to melt glass around a mandrel, a thin metal rod around which a glass bead is shaped. When the mandrel is removed, it forms the hole in the bead. Starting in 900 A.D., these handmade beads were placed in graves. Middle Years (1500s): Cottage industries began showing up in Jablonec, Stanovsko and Bedrichov the present-day Czech Republic. These industries made beads for larger jewelry factories. Beginning in the 1800s, manufacturers developed special molds and machines to produce pressed glass beads. Pressed glass beads are made with hot softened glass being pressed into a hand-operated or mechanized mold.

Roll out the fun with paper beads and baskets
Some of the paper beads you can buy in craft and jewelry stores are made by women in developing countries. A nonprofit group called BeadforLife, in Boulder, Colo., for instance, trains Ugandan women in paper bead-making, then buys their finished jewelry for sale in the United States. Besides beading, the Ugandans learn business and entrepreneurial skills. They open bank accounts. And 18 months after joining BeadforLife’s program, each graduate is expected to launch her own small business in her community.

Thursday Giveaway…
This week, one lucky winner will take home this treasure trove of goodies courtesy of Beadaholique ! Aren’t they generous? This is one incredible prize! Up for grabs is an assortment of beads and jewelry-making supplies that were inspired by autumn. I love all the rich, earthy colors. Make sure to swing by to check out these leafy components and other great deals available at Beadaholique . Since there is quite a lot, I decided to break it down a bit. I think it shows just what an awesome prize this is! The Beadaholique crew included some colored filigree stampings from Ezel Designs . They are lightweight and can easily be layered like I did in these earrings . Use them to frame and accentuate another component or let them stand alone. Carved stone leaves add a little bit of luxury to any design. I marveled at this assortment, mixing and matching them to create different effects. Some could be used as pendants, others could be turned into sumptuous bracelet and earring designs.

Tiny Shinys For YOU
My name is Jamie and I am the owner of Tiny Shinys. My items are handcrafted one at a time with lots of love and attention to detail. Each item is created using the highest quality wood, glass and metal components along with professionally printed images and top notch designer papers. Every piece is sealed with a glass like resin glaze to bring out the image and enhance the beauty of the piece. After each piece is created I add a fun mix of charms, beads, flowers, and other goodies along with a shiny silver ball chain or delicate organza ribbon. Each pendant is one of a kind and unique just like the people who wear them! I love what I do and I think the best part of my job is taking something ordinary looking (a blank dog tag for example) and transforming it into something extraordinary using simple supplies. I have had an obsession with beads and jewelry making since I was very young and I feel like I have finally found what I am supposed to be doing with that.

Bead Journal Project: April and May
April Bead Journal Project piece May Bead Journal Project piece For the first time ever, I’ve fallen behind in my commitment to participating in the Bead Journal Project Life happens sometimes, and you just have to roll with it. It’s kind of embarrassing that this is the year I’ve been a slacker, because I specifically picked to do little buttons with watch faces knowing that each would only take an hour or so! Oh well. Here are my pieces for April and May. April is blue to remind me of how rainy that month usually is…in fact, it’s the beginning of Mud Season in New England

Bead Journal Project: bracelet for December
My last bead embroidered bracelet for the year! It’s been a lot of fun making these each month for my contribution to the Bead Journal Project , but I’m happy to be finished! Next month I’m starting my 4th year with the project, and this year it’s going to be beaded buttons or cabochons…I haven’t exactly decided which yet, but either will use the same round button forms as a base. If you’d like to see any of my other bracelets for the year, all previous pieces can be found at these links: January February March April May June July August September October November Here are the instructions for how I am made these bracelets. Only one more to go! And I’m really looking forward to finishing off the Bead Journal Project with a bang this year. But for right now…November. Harvest colors and an earthy Guatemalan background material. I’m satisfied, and it goes with a lot of my fall/winter clothing

Bead Journal Project: bracelet for September
Every September, our apple trees are ready to harvest! We only have three trees, a Johnathan, a Gala, and a Golden Delicious. This year, the spring and summer weather caused the trees to be ready to pick about three weeks ahead of the regular schedule, so instead of being in the middle of apple season this past weekend, we are already finished
My Bead Journal Project piece celebrates our apples. Apple sauce, apple butter, apple dumplings, cake, pies, and tarts. Yum. Bead Journal Project: June and July
June Bead Journal Project piece July Bead Journal Project piece Yay!! I am officially caught back up! Will I stay caught up? Dunno. June is a mix of matte and shiny beads, in a little softer color than July. I always associate blues and deep purples with the summer months, and this year June really was kind of soft, with summer slow to get started. But once July got here…bang! Since the watch face for July didn’t have any kind of frame that I could stitch down, I embedded it in a bottle cap. First I punctured two very small holes in the bottom of the cap and stitched it to the fabric backing. Then I added some two-part epoxy resin and the watch face. The holes were too small for any leakage, thank heavens! Link to tutorial January Button February Button March Button April and May Buttons Copyright 2011 Cyndi Lavin. Back from Bead Fest
I have returned from Bead Fest! The best things about Bead Fest were meeting lots of awesome designers and bead makers, some for the first time, and some who I only get to see at shows. It really is the people who make all the hardships of a show worth the effort. My buddy Diane Hawkey and I did as much schmoozing as we could, watching each other’s booths, and going out for a couple of fancy and fun dinners. I had a good response to my newest stamped designs, and sold out of a few of them, which was encouraging. I ended up drawing and inking about a dozen new designs for stamps which I will be working on today. I bought some supplies for my holiday jewelry and some new items that I hope will inspire me to get back into designing for articles. As you may have gathered, the show was not so great financially for me. It was definitely not as bad as it could have been, as I covered my expenses, but not by much.

Bead Table Wednesday
Today on the table, I have some ingredients to make more Hinged Pendants with Shimmer Keys and Vintaj Arte Metal hinge components. I ended up making two of the pendants, but I only used one of the keys pictured. One of the other keys ended up in a necklace, but I didn’t take a pic of the ingredients of that one. Here are my ingredients for Lorelei’s Fusion Beads Reader Challenge Still expecting another couple of parts for that, but it was good to get it all laid out. I really like BTWs because it forces me to spend a little time in the beading studio, which I don’t often get to do. Of course, with the state of my studio at the moment (see above…ouch) I had to do some major cleaning before I made anything. I spent about 2 hours sorting, gathering more scrap silver to send to the refinery, and daydreaming. But I did make one full necklace and two pendants, and my table is ready for another work session soon!

If you want to own gold but don’t want to pay the price of 14K or 18K solid gold, you might want to get the 22kt Gold plated Copper Beads which would be a great addition to your bead collection. Anthropology Inspired Charm Necklace
My pal Kelly called me up to tell me about a hobby she picked up when she accidentally entered a store near her house-jewelry. I’ve accidentally picked up a lot of hobbies this way, but I had been wanting to try my hand at jewelry making for awhile, so this was good timing. It’s an unexplored piece of my world. The great thing about necklaces is that they fit, no matter what you had for dinner the day before. She took a couple classes, and we made plans to get together. She taught me some really cool techniques I’ll blog about soon. After my tutorial, I showed her this necklace from Anthropology I was in love with… *Image from Anthropology website I did not love the price (almost 300 dollars), or that weird tooth looking thingie in the middle. I saw this tutorial at Flamingo Toes for making your own….oh my! I went to Hobby Lobby, and Michaels, collected some beads and charms, and got to work. The hardest part of the whole project was finding the charms I wanted.

I love beads
I love beads Monday, 3 October 2011 Readers here are aware of my passion for beads and bead jewelry. Beads are not only a jewelry item but also a symbol that are used to show love and association. Beads are used on countless occasions and for diverse purposes. Given the emotional value attached with beads, people go a long way to chose bead jewelry. Personally, bead charms remind me so much about life and about the days when I used to have one on my wrist. I still carry mine with lot of love. Jewelry always defines a persona of a person who is wearing it. It also shows the class, taste and sophistication. That is why most people are really choosy what they wear. I try to stay update with the latest and what is new in the world jewelry. Given my own interest in latest beads fashion trends and trying to figure out new ideas online, I came upon Bead Crafty C one of the hottest places that offers beads jewelry. It is among the most sought-after jewelry in the world.

Bead & Button Update
I have been working away and I’m on schedule and I’ve slept 8 hours for the last three nights! (That’s a miracle!) Today will be my last day of clay work and then we’ll be painting, sanding and tagging things for 2 days. I stopped counting when I reached 700 focal bead, pendants, connectors and clasps. That doesn’t include disk beads or charms. I think I may have enough! Funny though, the pile doesn’t look like 700 beads. But I will have a full table. I CAN NOT WAIT TO GO!!! I have sketched out a new plan for my booth and it involves needing 3 of these : Which led me to list 8 of my new cuff beads on Etsy to pay for said displays! So if you were lusting and thought you’d have to wait until mid-June to get your mitts on one .
