Comic Con Recap: The Display Cases at LEGO’s Booth; 4184 Black Pearl On Display
Despite the indescribable madness surrounding the LEGO booth at this year’s Comic Con, there was one shining aspect of their booth besides the retail space, eight shining aspects to be exact: their display cases. Ever since I can remember, LEGO has been putting display cases in their booth showing off their current product line from select themes. The glass cases were tall with one or two sets on each shelf. This year however, things were a little different. There were a total of eight large cases, and inside each case was huge diorama showcasing a particular theme. I thought this was a great way to display the currently available products as it shows what can be possible when you put everything together. The presentation looked much nicer and more cohesive than just sets on a shelf. I tip my hat to whoever designed these displays. It was one of the few things I enjoyed at the booth.

I have a love for collecting things. I went through a phase of headbands which happens to be completely useless now since I’ve discovered headbands don’t look all too good on me. For a while it was vintage belts… I’ve tossed many of those away too since my style has completely evolved. One collection that I still use and add to today is my costume jewelry collection. Ever since I was in high school I scoured thrift shops for chunky necklaces and unique, often weird earrings. Now, I have a love for costume jewelry and all things dripped in gold (color, not the actual metal, of course). My go to place for costume jewelry is Forever 21 because it’s cheap and if it happens to be a “fashion mistake” in the future, well, at least I didn’t spend too much on it right? Perhaps thats an oxymoron but we will labor on. It is easy to quantify the well to do among us however lumping in every kid who works part time at McDonalds, or has a summer, work study job, or is simply unemployable is no way to calculate the effect of taxes on the great unwashed. There is no sales tax on food, rent, or dope. Sales tax can be optional, make a sandwich instead of burgering your way to obesity and poverty. Maybe that sets the bar too high for the victim class but there is a ring of truth to it.

Iwrote a few weeks ago about how my necklaces have become symbols for me. They give me strength. I’ve added a couple more, and thought I’d share my favorites. My necklace display board is an old bulletin board. I stuck in pushpins and hang my necklaces. This keeps them from getting tangled, and it just makes me happy to see them hanging there each morning before I leave for work. This is one of my first necklaces. It’s a Lisa Leonard . It had tarnished pretty badly, but I found it last weekend and shined it up. Put a new 24″ chain on it. Love it. These are two of my newest. The one on the left has the kids’ names on it, and the star is kind of my thing. I love the stars. They make me dream. The one on the right is by Chantelle Nicole . The other is by Daisy Metal Creations . I can’t even explain how much I love her work.

Ok, pun aside, western apparel has been a part of the fashion canon for many years now. The last time I checked about 60 of those box-holders had over the past few years received more than $2 million in various farm subsidies delivered to those boxes. I find myself wondering if their boxes contain miniature tractors and other farm implements that make those checks possible. But I guess they must own land somewhere that is enlisted in a USDA subsidy program or two. I know of a few of those folks. They are not young. Their skin is tanned and leathered and goes well with their turquoise jewelry. Their rides are nice, too. Whenever I see one of them drive away, I wonder about our system of farm subsidies. Most city people do not have a clue about the whole federal mechanism that is used to financially prop up the Ag economy.

Paging Dr. Freud. I’m ready to admit something. I’ve suffered from “costume envy” my whole life. My earliest memory of the problem was when I was five, fighting tears as my Mom presented me with a flimsy store bought black cat costume with angry-cat mask. The material was cheap, the mask hideous. The real issue was my older sister, looking resplendent in her bride costume. White dress, white veil, it was so unfair! She looked angelic and I looked like a rabid alley cat! You’d think I’d be happy when, two years later, the beautiful bridal outfit now fit me. But then my sister shows up, twirling in a wild and colorful gypsy skirt, blouse and scarf ensemble. She was adorned with Mom’s costume jewelry and got to wear lots of colorful make-up, gypsy-style. Pam Will describes the fundraisers, held three or four times a year, as “huge garage sales.” They take place in a warehouse at Connecto Electric, the business Pam and her husband, Jeff, own at 3716 McClelland Ave., just off the Bayfront Connector. Pam and a core of 20 volunteers have transformed a 45-by-60-foot area of the bright, airy warehouse into an inviting boutique. “We use everything we can. Nothing goes to waste,” says Lil Laskowski, who is in charge of refurbishing the costume jewelry, displayed on wood shutters that Pam found discarded on a roadside. The volunteers originally met at House of Healing, which served women recovering from addictions.

Visit Photo-Eye To Purchase “Same Difference” Rinko Kawauchi’s “Illuminance” is a hardcover monograph, by Aperture, that manages to glow in a manner suggested by the title. The spine is separated from the book, which is a little quirky, but the inside of the cover is more easily seen this way, and it introduces the trippy, day-glow, space-age palette that one finds within the plates. Nice touch. Not unlike Mr. Panar’s aforementioned book, “Illuminance” is a collection of seemingly disconnected images. But it differs distinctly, as these images are anything but random and dry. Page after page, the photographs scream “art,” with light, and color, dynamic compositions, and the impact of surprise. The kaleidoscopic pinks and purples, black cats and costume jewelry, desert wanderers and dead bugs, and of course the requisite light cascading through cherry blossoms. Ultimately, she builds a cohesive vision through the narrative.

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen. Cadmium, mercury, arsenic and chlorine. But, do you recall… Yes, they have been recalled. Again and again. The epidemic of foreign-made toxic toys making its way onto retail shelves might be best described as something out of a science fiction movie rather than a beloved holiday song. In 2007 alone, more than 17 million toys were recalled because they violated federal lead paint standards. In January 2010, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 55,000 units of children’s costume jewelry that contained high levels of cadmium and in June of this year, 12 million promotional drinking glasses sold at McDonald’s were recalled because the painted coating contained cadmium. For parents, figuring out which toys are healthy, which have been recalled and which ones your kids are least likely to lick or otherwise ingest can be a full time job. But, there may be one silver lining to this cloud of toxic toys:

I know you’ll love her too. Enjoy this little virtual interview! 1. Who are you, and what do you create? I am Florence Sauerbrey aka Loupiac on Etsy. I came from France 9 years ago to marry that wooden boat builder man of mine. I make lampwork beads with glass rods that I melt with a torch. Sometimes I make jewelry with my beads, wear a piece once or a couple of times and then it disappears in my drawer forever because I don’t wear -nor do I sell.

Czech glass beads are beautiful additions to jewelry designs, but not too many people know how a bead comes into being. These beads are still made in the Czech Republic the same way they have been for hundreds of years. Take a journey into the makings of one special bead. Early Years (250 B.C.) : A piece of glass originally was created by lampworking. An oil lamp is used to melt glass around a mandrel, a thin metal rod around which a glass bead is shaped. When the mandrel is removed, it forms the hole in the bead. Starting in 900 A.D., these handmade beads were placed in graves. Middle Years (1500s): Cottage industries began showing up in Jablonec, Stanovsko and Bedrichov�� the present-day Czech Republic. These industries made beads for larger jewelry factories. Beginning in the 1800s, manufacturers developed special molds and machines to produce pressed glass beads. Pressed glass beads are made with hot softened glass being pressed into a hand-operated or mechanized mold.
