Arik Kastan jewelry honors the beauty of rose gold
Two fans of rose gold with a keen eye for design are taking the pink-tinged metal and paying homage to traditional Victorian aesthetic in their line called Arik Kastan Designers Tamar Kelman and Christine Kim, who are based in Los Angeles and New York, respectively, named their jewelry collection after a Tel Aviv-based craftsman who mixes a “special blend” of rose gold and produces pieces based on their vision. Kastan, Kelman and Kim keep dainty vintage details such as filigree etching and pave, rough diamonds running throughout the collection. Moonstones, garnets and emeralds are set in the gold and pop against the warm-hued metal. Kelman discovered Kastan’s work while traveling in Israel and became “obsessed” with it. “He has guided us, because he’s such a seasoned metal worker,” Kelman says about Kastan. “He has such amazing technical skills specific to the Victorian era, and we have an eye for design.”

Kathy Rose, owner of Roseark (formerly Kaviar & Kind) in Los Angeles, is one designer who launched a less expensive line for her celebrity-frequented -jewelry outpost. Roseark has a customer for pieces like Alon Shina’s 18k yellow-gold labradorite and moonstone bib necklace for $21,000, to be sure. But at press time, her eponymous secondary line, made of 22k gold and semiprecious stones and rarely priced above the $1,000 mark, had been on the floor for about a week. “I’ve sold three units,” she says. “That’s a lot for my first low-end line launch.”

Psychic said stealing jewelry would remove curse, sheriff says
A psychic was arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials for allegedly scaring a 12-year-old girl into stealing $10,000 in jewelry. During “psychic readings,” the suspect, Jackeline Lopez, of Palmdale, allegedly told the girl “horrible things” would happen to her unless she stole the jewelry from her parents. “Over a period of a month following the reading, suspect Lopez encouraged the victim to bring her jewelry from the victim’s home to be used in removing the curse from the victim and their family,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement released Friday morning. “Routinely Lopez would orchestrate a ritual in which the victim would place the stolen jewelry in the caldron and attempt to remove the curse. Each time, however, Lopez would tell the victim that what they had brought was not enough to remove the horrible curse and she needed more. This continued until the victim’s parents noticed the missing jewelry and confronted the victim on its whereabouts.”

Armed couple steal $8,000 from downtown jewelry store
Los Angeles police detectives released a video Friday of an armed man and woman robbing a downtown jewelry store of about $8,000 in cash. Detectives say the crime goes beyond the normal “smash and grab” robbery conducted by gang members in the jewelry district because the suspects appeared to have organized the heist. The robbers entered the small jewelry store on the fifth floor of the Mitta Building at 404 West 7th St. around 3 p.m. Tuesday. One suspect spoke to the jewelers, then pulled a gun and forced them to kneel. After some screaming, the jewelers gave up the cash, which the robbers placed in a bag before leaving without hurting anyone. “The man with the gun seems to be the brawn in the case, while the woman seems to be the brains,” said Det. Alfredo Rasch, a veteran investigator of downtown jewelry robberies. Rasch said the “man-woman pairing is unusual.” The man was described as black or possibly Latino, 6 feet tall and 35 to 40 years old. He wears thick reading glasses.
